(Washington, DC) - Log Cabin Republicans support the Senate Republican Conference and their call for fiscal responsibility, particularly avoiding drastic tax increases scheduled for January 2011 if immediate action is not taken. Log Cabin Republicans do not see the letter informing the Democratic leadership that Republicans will not vote for cloture on any bill until "the Senate has acted to fund the government and... prevent the tax increase" as a threat to passage of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2011.

"The number one priority of this month is for Congress to pass the funds necessary to keep the lights running at home and abroad, while avoiding the largest tax hike in our nation's history. We are fully supportive of the Senate Republicans' focus on these key issues," said R. Clarke Cooper, Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director. "While this complicates the current legislative calendar, this is not an attack on repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.' The National Defense Authorization Act funds the largest component of the federal government, our military. Based on this letter alone, Republicans are not going to block passage of this critical bill. Log Cabin is happy to see Republican senators taking a stand. Gay and lesbian Americans, like all Americans, are concerned about jobs, the economy, and the taxes which burden our families. This letter, in fact, addresses the impending return of the Death Tax, which is uniquely cruel to same-sex couples who, despite President Obama's promises, still cannot have their relationships federally recognized. The Republican caucus is fighting for the good of all Americans today, and should be applauded."
