Advanced Features

Our Search has advanced features to help you find exactly what you're looking for. These features are easier to understand with a few examples:

Quotes:

Translated: require the phrase "USA elections"
Finds "USA elections".
Does not find "USA Government" nor "elections of type USA".

Capitalization:

Translated: require AIDS in all capital letters
Finds "HIV/AIDS" and "AIDS policy".
Does not find the lowercase "learning aids". Search terms or phrases with any uppercase characters will be treated as case sensitive. "AIDS" matches only all-uppercase versions, but "aids" will match "AIDS", "Aids", and "aids". "President" matches only "President", not "president" or "PRESIDENT".

+ sign:

Translated: require USA, require elections
Finds "USA Elections", "USA elections", and "elections of type USA".
Does not find the lowercase "usa elections", nor shorter "USA election".

- sign:

Translated: forbid USA, require elections
Finds "Georgia elections", "European elections", and lowercase "usa elections".
Does not find "USA government" nor "USA elections".

And & or:

Translated: prefer USA, require elections
Finds "Government elections", "USA elections", and "USA Elections".
Pages with both words appear higher in the list.

Not:

Translated: forbid planet, require Venus (case sensitive), require pictures, prefer images
First lists "pictures and images of Venus", then "Venus pictures".
Does not list lowercase "venus picture", nor forbidden "picture of planet Venus".

Wildcard:

Translated: require the word "usa" (case insensitive), require words starting with "govern"
Finds "USA government", "usa governors", "Usa Government".
The asterisk is a wildcard that represents a maximum of four letters or numbers. The asterisk can only be used in words or phrases which have at least three alpha-numeric characters (to avoid overly broad searches). A search for "th*" would be ignored.

Common words:

Translated: ignores common words like "where", "is", and "the", but requires words containing "frog"
Finds "frog", "frogleg", and "bullfrog".
To suppress the ignore feature, use quotes, as in "Where is the *frog*?". The asterisk is a powerful search tool, but has some limitations. It cannot span words. So the query "powerfu*earch" would not match the first sentence of this paragraph.
