(Washington, DC) – Log Cabin Republicans praise Governor Jodi Rell (R-CT) for announcing her support for civil unions in Connecticut. "We applaud Governor Rell for recognizing that all families deserve basic fairness, including gay and lesbian families," said Log Cabin Republicans President Patrick Guerriero.

Legislation establishing civil unions in Connecticut is currently under consideration by the state legislature. Governor Rell announced her support for civil unions by stating, "I don't believe in discrimination of any sort, and I want people to have equal rights and equal opportunities."

"The Governor's decision is an important reminder that the fight for basic fairness for gay and lesbian families is a bi-partisan fight," continued Guerriero. "Log Cabin praises the bi-partisan work of the Connecticut legislature and the state and local groups who have encouraged this important debate on civil unions and civil marriage equality," said Guerriero.

"Whether it's Governor Schwarzenegger signing legislation in California, or Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) championing hate crimes protections in the U.S. Senate, or whether it is the courageous Republican legislators in red states who have spoken out against intolerance, the front line in the battle for gay and lesbian equality is in the Republican Party," said Log Cabin Political Director Chris Barron. "We understand there is much more work to do in the GOP. Log Cabin realizes our tremendous obligation as the voice for moderate and conservative gay America. We look forward to continuing our work with inclusive Republican leaders to win the battle for basic fairness.
